About Maat

A friend who listens — and sometimes challenges you.

“Maat” is the Dutch word for a friend — a mate. That is how we think of the app: not a guru, not a mentor, but the friend who listens while you talk it through, remembers what you said, and now and then asks the question you were avoiding.

Founder’s note

Thomas, founder of Maat Journal

I started journaling while travelling the world. I wanted to keep the beautiful moments — the places, the people, the mornings that felt like they mattered — so that one day, when I am old, I could look back and know it had been a full life. That was the whole ambition: a record worth reading later.

Somewhere along the way the journal changed shape. I began writing down everything I learned — from books, from mistakes, from conversations — and the notes started to organise themselves into ideas. Those ideas eventually became books, and the books became bestsellers. None of that was the plan. It was what happened when I paid attention on paper for long enough.

Journaling changed my life, and I wanted to share that with as many people as I could. But I am also a computer-science engineer, and I am allergic to vague promises. If journaling helps, I want to see it in numbers — which areas of my life are moving, and which are not. And if a journal holds the most private things I will ever say, it has to be secured properly, not “trust us” secured. Those two demands, measurable results and real security, are why Maat Journal exists.

Today I journal by voice, mostly while walking, and Maat is the friend on the other end: it listens, it keeps the memory, it shows me the pattern, and every so often it challenges me. I hope it does the same for you.
